SCENE 01 (intro)

SETTING:STREET (NEIGHBORHOOD)

Ponyboy and johnny are walking in the park. they are having a conversation but ponyboy is thinking on stuff on his own

Ponyboy (Narrating): My name is Ponyboy Curtis, I´m fourteen years old. I live with my two brothers Darry and Sodapop. Soda is sixteen going on seventeen. He dropped out of school when he was a little bit younger. he now work full time at a gas station. He is a good-looking guy and he is easygoing and a wisecracker. He usually hangs out with his friend Steve and the gang, I don´t like Steve a lot though.

Darry is a tough looking guy, hard as nails in his twenties, a person who works too hard to maintain soda and me. it wasn´t always this way. ever since mom and dad were killed in a car crash. Even though they left us money, Darry grew up too fast. He finished high school but he never entered college. He is hard, fierce and smart like mom but is the spitting image of dad.

I consider myself a pretty shy, yet tough guy. I like to read and hang out with the gang. I am a greaser. I keep my hair long and comb it back with hair grease. Us greasers wear leather jackets, t-shirts and jeans. We´re not like the Socs who don´t have a lot of money to buy clothes and fancy cars. We have money but we keep it simple.

 

Scene 01

SETTING: STREET (NEIGHBORHOOD)

PONYBOY AND JOHNNY ARE NOW IN A CONVERSATION. PONYBOY STOPS NARRARATING, AUDIENCE LISTENS TO CONVERSATION.

Johnny (inquiring): Ponyboy, Why don´t you like using money? You have tons of it

Ponyboy: I just think money isn´t everything. Darry just bought a brand new red corvette but I think that money only buys material stuff. you can´t buy feelings or happiness.

Johnny (annoyed): I think you´re wrong. the Socs don´t have any money. Why can´t we be allowed to buy cool stuff? Darry works way too hard. He is allowed to buy a fancy car like that.

Ponyboy: It´s not my fault my parents left us a lot of money, I´d rather have my parents back instead of just having money. It´s good once in a while but money´s not everything.

[WALK AWAY]

 

Scene 02

SETTING: PONYBOY´S DRIVEWAY

AFTER WALKING AROUND FOR A WHILE, JOHNNY AND PONYBOY WALK TO PONY´S HOUSE. PONYBOY SHOWS JOHNNY DARRY´S BRAND NEW RED CORVETTE.

Johnny: Your brother´s car is awesome!

Ponyboy: I think it calls a lot of attention

Johnny (annoyed): You worry too much Ponyboy. For a guy that has a rep for using his brains, you are acting pretty dumb.

Ponyboy: Money just isn´t my thing Johnnycake, where are you sleeping tonight?

Johnny (solemnly): at the lot.

Ponyboy: if you want, you can stay here. We have a guest room open and the front door unlocked if you wanna crash later. It gets awfully cold at night.

Johnny: Don´t worry, I have my jeans jacket.

Ponyboy (waves goodbye): see you later, man

[PONYBOY HEADS INSIDE]

 

SCENE 03

SETTING: THE HOUSE´S LIVING ROOM. SODAPOP IS LYING ON THE SOFA . HE STILL HAS HIS WORK CLOTHES ON. DARRY ALSO CAME BACK FROM WORK AND IS COOKING DINNER. THERE IS A DECK OF CARDS IN THE TABLE IN FRONT OF THE SOFA.

Sodapop (excited): hey, hey, hey Ponyboy!

Darry (sternly): you´re late, we said eight o´clock sharp its quarter past nine.

Ponyboy: sorry Darry, I was just with Johnny at the park. I also showed him your new corvette.

Darry: no excuse is good enough, Ponyboy. I told you to arrive here at eight o´clock sharp.

Sodapop (convincingly): Darry, come on. He was just having a little fun. Remember how it was when you were his age? It was all fun and games.

Ponyboy (Narrarator): Soda is the only person who can convince Darry. I guess he´s just so easygoing and friendly. nobody manages to avoid smiling when soda is around, and that is a fact.

Darry (back to scene): okay, okay just this once, kid brother.

[Dallas walks in]

Dallas: hey guys how´s it goin´?

Sodapop: hey Dally, how bout´some poker?

Dallas: yeah, why not? by the way Darry, sweet new ride.

Ponyboy (Narrarator): Dally was the kind of dangerous tough hood. he was good at rumbles. he had been in the cooler a couple times for theft and unlicensed weapon possession. he had belonged to many New York gangs, but for some reason he stuck with our gang.

Darry (to ponyboy): okay, kid time to go to sleep.

[ponyboy leaves the room]

[FADE OUT]

 

Scene 04

SETTING: THE LIVING ROOM IS EMPTY IN THE MORNING, EXCEPT FOR DALLAS, WHO IS ASLEEP ON THE SOFA. DARRY THEN WALKS IN.

Darry (shaking dallas): Dally, Dally! wake up!

Dallas (half-asleep): whatcha want?

Darry: I guess you stayed the night, huh?

Dallas: heh, guess I did.

[JOHNNY COMES IN RUNNING]

Johnny (agitated): Guys! please help me!

Darry and Dallas (in unison): what is it?

Johnny (Nervously): I was sleeping in the lot as usual, then the fuzz came, he shook me awake and told me I was sleeping on private property and that he was gonna take me to the station. I ran but he probably followed me.

[as johnny finishes someone knocks on the door, darry opens and there is a cop. he has black sunglasses and a bushy brown moustache]

Cop: good morning, sir officer Mitchell at your service. I was following a juvenile criminal that was sleeping on the lot. it appears he came inside this residence

Darry (in a low voice): okay, how much?

Cop (surprised): how much for what?

Darry (in a low voice): how much for you to forget this ever happened? you know I´ve got money.

Cop (indignant): excuse me sir, I am an officer of the law and I only answer to law itself. did you know that bribing a officer can be considered a crime?

[DARRY IS ABOUT TO ANSWER WHEN PONYBOY COMES DOWN FULLY DRESSED. IT IS A SATURDAY MORNING SO HE HAS NO SCHOOL]

Ponyboy (surprised): what´s going on?

Darry: nothing, pony go do something else.

Ponyboy (insisting): Tell me what´s going on!

Darry (angrily): that´s none of your business!

[DARRY SHOVES PONYBOY AND HIS BACK IS SLAMMED AGAINST THE WALL]

Darry: oh my god! I´m so sorry Ponyboy!

Ponyboy: get away from me!

[ponyboy pushes darry away and bolts rapidly out the door, he runs until he is out of view]

Darry (shouting): PONYBOY CURTIS! COME BACK!

[scene ends]

 

Scene 05

SETTING: PONYBOY IS WALKING IN THE PARK WITH HIS HEAD DOWN. HIS EXPRESSION IS SADNESS AND SCAREDNESS. HE HAS BOTH HIS THUMBS JERKED IN THE POCKETS OF HIS JEANS.

SUDDENLY, PONYBOY SPOTS TWO SOCS THEY LOOK LIKE THEY WANT TROUBLE.

Soc #1 (mockingly): well, well, well, pete. look what we got here

Soc #2 (mockingly): yeah, a greasy little kid.

Ponyboy (silently): I don´t want any trouble

Soc #1: we didn´t ask, greaser. Hold him pete!

[soc #2 holds ponyboy in a strangle]

[SOC #1 PUNCHES PONYBOY A COUPLE TIMES IN THE RIBS, THEN IN THE FACE]

*ponyboy stumbles around before falling to the ground. fade out*

[SCENE ENDS]

 

Scene 06

SETTING: ONE HOUR LATER PONYBOY WAKES UP AT THE PARK. HIS WALLET IS MISSING AND HE HAS A BRUISE ON HIS FACE. THERE IS AN INTENSE PAIN IN HIS ABDOMEN.

[Ponyboy walks until he gets home]

[he enters home only to find sodapop sitting on the table, worried]

Ponyboy (worried): hey soda, what´s going on?

Sodapop: After you left, Darry refused to be arrested so he was taken away by the police man.

Ponyboy: so he´s in the cooler?

Sodapop: only for a week.

Ponyboy: thank god, it could´ve been more, you never know what is gonna happen with these cops. *grunt*

Sopapop (worried): is something wrong, pony?

Ponyboy: at the park I was jumped by a couple of socs, they punched me and left me in the park. I really need to go to the hospital *wince*

(ponyboy grunts and winces in pain. sodapop helps him out the door and scene ends)

 

Scene 07

MEANWHILE PONYBOY IS GETTING JUMPED......

SETTING: DARRY IS SITTING ON A CHAIR, WITH A TABLE IN FRONT OF HIM. HE HAS A PITCHER OF WATER AND A GLASS IN fRONT OF HIM.

Darry (in his mind): well, I guess I screwed up. why would I think bribing a cop was a good idea?

Darry (v.2): don´t worry, nothing will happen to you, the cop just wouldn't budge, the good thing is you have money.

Darry: money can´t get me out of here, I should just face my consequences....

Darry (v.2): come on, how bad can it be?

Darry (desperate): get out of my head!

(just as darry finishes two people in suits enter.)

Man #1 (serious): Mr. Darrel Curtis?

Darry: that´s me

Man #2 (serious): you´re here because you´ve committed a minor crime.

Darry: come on, it was just a mistake!

Man #2: bribing an officer does sound like a mistake

Man #1 (matter-of-factly): and resisting arrest.

Darry: okay, do I least get my phone call?

(man gives him a cell phone and they both step out)

DARRY DIALS THE PHONE, SCREEN STARTS SPLITTING AND TURNS INTO THE IMAGE OF SODAPOP ANSWERING

Sodapop: Hello?

Darry: Sodapop, it´s me, Darry!

Sodapop: Oh finally! man, you had me worried!

Darry: don´t worry about me, soda. where´s Ponyboy?

Sodapop: I dunno. haven´t seen him since he ran off

Darry (desperate): well, I can´t talk to him. tell him   I´m gonna be sentenced right now. I´m gonna try to convince the policemen to give me another call after    I´ve been sentenced. take care of Ponyboy, ok Soda?

Sodapop (calmly): Yeah,yeah. don´t worry about us.

(screen fade. end scene)

 

Scene 08

SETTING: BACK AT HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL. PONYBOY IS LYING ON THE COUCH WHITH A WHITE MEDICAL PATCH ON ONE OF HIS EYES, AND A BANDAGE AROUND HIS CHEST.

Sodapop: you´re gonna be awright, bro

Ponyboy: Yeah, just a small concussion on my eye... I´m worried bout´ my ribs though

Sodapop: don´t worry bout´ thing Pony.

[johnny and darry come running in]

Darry (careless): hey, kid

Johnny: Hey soda, hey pony

[sodapop smiles, ponyboy tries his best before giving up because of the pain]

Darry: curse them socs, they should know better about messin´ with us.

Johnny: but why did they jump you, Ponyboy?

Ponyboy (in pain): I dunno. I was just walkin´there minding my own business. a couple of socs were just looking for trouble, I guess.

Darry: Shoot. they just got into a hell lot of trouble.

Ponyboy (persuasively): come on, darry. it´s not worth it-

Sodapop (interrupting): yeah, they knew they had it comin´

Darry: I dunno about you, but I´m gonna go find them and beat the hell out of them for treating pony like that.

Sodapop (confidently): yeah, let´s show them

Darry: Johnny, you comin´?

Johnny: yes, but I got a bad feeling about this.

[SODa and darry storm out the door. johnny walks behind them in a much slower, calm pace]

(SCENE ENDS)

 

SCENE 09

SETTING: THE THREE GREASERS ARE WALKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. DALLY IS PLAYING WITH HIS KNUCKLES, CRACKING THEM AND HOLDING HIS FISTS. SODAPOP IS IN HIS USUAL SWAGGER, WITH HIS HEAD HIGH AND AN EXPRESSION OF CONFIDENCE AND JOHNNY IS JUST WALKING WITH HIS HANDS IN HIS POCKETS.

Dally (between clenched teeth): wait till I get my hands on those socs

Sodapop: yeah, we´ll show them how it´s done, messin´    with our gang members.

Johnny (worriedly): let´s just not hope pete´s there. remember that time?

Sodapop: yeah, how he jumped you and took your money? it was really terrible. we didn´t go after him because Darry didn´t want us to.

[dally is about to say something when they spot the two socs going the opposite direction as them, the both groups look at each other for a second, until the socs break into a sprint]

Dally (angrily): THERE!

Pete : RUN!

[the two parties chase each other until they get to the center of the park where ponyboy was previously jumped]

Pete: What´s your problem, huh?

Sodapop (panting): you jumped one of ours, on our territory!

Pete: Liar!

[pete shoves the closest greaser which is johnny, johnny falls down and hits his head on the curb]

Dally (stifles a sob): Johnny, no. please, don´t do this to me

(DALLY STANDS UP, HIS FACE IS AS SERIOUS AS EVER. HE GRABS PETE IN A STRANGLE, WHILE SODAPOP FIGHTS THE OTHER SOC)

(SCENE FADE OUT)

 

SCENE 10

SETTING: PONYBOY WALKING AGAIN, THIS TIME ALONE

Ponyboy (narrating): After Johnny died, everything was a blur. Dally left town, never told us why, just one day we went to his place and it was abandoned. we asked buck, his best friend, nobody knew. Darry served his time in the cooler, he learned his lesson, and now he´s not so greedy on money, nobody in the gang is, after the incident with Johnny, it was better to avoid it.

Johnny´s folk didn´t care, they left town the next day, with their car packed to the brim with stuff that was apparently more importan than their own blood and flesh: Jonathan Cade.

We managed to fix a little the situation with the socs. after Soda and Darry beat those two real good, they      didn´t mess with us, they better not.

I guess not every story has a happy ending.

(Ponyboy arrives at his driveway, this time the corvette is not there. he enters his house)

NOTE

the corvette represents the greaser´s greed and necessity for money. the corvette missing on the last scene represents. the maturity of the greasers and them being over money
